UFC 161 Preview/Predictions with Ryan Pike

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to Canada on Saturday night for its first visit to Winnipeg. The show, originally headlined by Renan Barao and Eddie Wineland, will instead see prominent light heavyweights Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson do battle in the main event. Much like UFC's prior visit to the Canadian prairies, this show has been riddled with injuries – besides the main event injury to Barao, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Isaac Vallie-Flagg were also pulled due to injury.

Let's take a quick look at what's on tap.

MAIN EVENT

Rashad Evans over Dan Henderson by unanimous decision

Both of these guys have incredible resumes, but neither is particularly happy with their recent performances. Evans, a former UFC champion and Ultimate Fighter winner, has lost his last two fights after previously losing once in his entire career. Henderson's a legend, a former Strikeforce and PRIDE champion, who also hasn't been amazing lately, having lost his last fight to Lyoto Machida. Henderson's also 42, has 38 pro fights and has a lot of miles on him. Evans is relatively fresh, which gives him a bit of an advantage. Evans also arguably has better tactical striking than Henderson, albeit less power, so he has the ability to execute a game-plan on his feet or on the mat. If he can stick to his game-plan, which is probably designed to negate Henderson's power, he can win. It'll be very close, though.

UNDERCARD (PPV)

Roy Nelson over Stipe Miocic by TKO

Brought in after the show lost its main event, Nelson is on the last fight of his UFC contact. While his future is a bit in doubt, Nelson's firmly cemented as a strong – but not quite elite – heavyweight with very good striking and who's impossible to finish. Miocic is talented, with just one loss, but he's not quite at Nelson's level.

Igor Pokrajac over Ryan Jimmo by decision

Pokrajac is a cagey veteran making his tenth UFC appearance, while Jimmo is making his third. Most notable for his ultra-fast knockout win at UFC 149 in Calgary, Jimmo's coming off a loss to James Te-Huna in Feburary. Pokrajac hasn't been great in his last two outings (one a loss, one a loss overturned due to a drug failure) and desperately needs a win. Jimmo's Canadian and has some momentum, but Pokrajac is a veteran and will do what he needs to do to grind out a win.

Alexis Davis over Roxi Sexton by submission

In the first women's UFC bout to take place in Canada, Ontario's Alexis Davis faces England's Roxi Sexton. Davis is a strong fighter, most notable for her absolute war with Sarah Kaufman last year. Sexton is also a very good fighter, but is older than Davis, has arguably faced somewhat lesser competition (or at least hasn't fought “names”) and won't have the crowd on her side. The scales tip towards Davis.

Pat Barry over Shawn Jordan by decision

This one seems fairly even, although Barry has more UFC experience and is arguably a better fighter. Jordan comes from Team Jackson, so he'll have a game plan. Barry's very talented, but also prone to ignoring game-plans and just throwing down with his opponent – which has cost him in the past. If Barry can avoid getting caught up in the moment – or caught with a hard shot – he should win.

PRELIMS (FX)

Tyron Woodley over Jake Shields by decision

Woodley killed Jay Hieron in 36 seconds in his UFC debut in February. Prior to that, his only career loss was to Nate Marquardt and he's shown off great wrestling and submission defense. Shields relies upon wrestling and submissions for wins, but he's also won just once in his last four fights. Momentum and confidence is on Woodley's side.

Sam Stout over James Krause by decision

Sam Stout is awesome. Not yet 30, he's fought 15 times in the UFC and taken home fight night bonuses on six occasions. His fights are usually entertaining, but there's almost never a finish. He's fighting Krause, a TUF10 alumnus who lost his fight to get into the house, who's jumping in on short notice. Stout should be able to win this one.

Sean Pierson over Kenny Robertson by decision

Pierson's 37, but he's getting some footing underneath him in the UFC, having won 3 of 5 in the Octagon – with losses to Jake Ellenberger and Dong Hyun Kim. Robertson's considerably younger, but he's fought infrequently in recent years and against lesser competition than Pierson. While the elder fighter's quest for a finish in the UFC will probably continue, I like his chances to pick up a win.

Edwin Figueroa over Roland Delorme by TKO

Figueroa is best known for a fantastic fight he had with Michael McDonald in Seattle back in 2011. He's won half of his UFC fights, but his best performance came in that loss. He lost in February and is looking to bounce back. Delorme lost his last fight, which was in UFC's last trip to the prairies a year ago, but the loss was overturned due to a drug failure. Figueroa's generally looked better than Delorme, so he gets the edge.

PRELIMS (Facebook)

John Maguire over Mitch Clarke by decision

Maguire's lost two straight and needs a win, while Clarke hasn't looked great in his UFC bouts.

Yves Jabouin over Dustin Pague by decision

Jabouin is a fun fighter with a lot of decision wins and stoppage losses during his WEC and UFC tenures. Pague's lost three of four and is generally not amazing. Go with the Haiti-Canada transplant here.

These two battle next weekend in the main event of UFC 161. Henderson has won four of his last five fights (Rua, Fedor, Cavalcante & Sobral). Evans is coming off a pair of losses (Jones & Nogueira) and is in need of a win badly here if he wants to continue to compete in the UFC.
